We were not going to go fishing this week as the swell was going to be extra bumpy for our smaller boat but then there was word that the Bluefin bit great the day before – so we decided to go for it, and I am glad that we did.
We got to the boat at 530am for an early departure and had Cody joining us on this day – our first time fishing together.
After getting topped off with live bait we were on our way headed southwest towards the 425, a popular “high spot” for tuna anglers out of San Diego. The truth was, with the high swell from the west, we had little choice but to run as far south as possible so we weren’t headed directly into the high swell.
On our way to the initial planned spot, we were going to be going right past the Coronado Islands so my dad suggested that we stop and give it a quick look which we did.
There was a lot of birds and bait around which is always a good sign, then Cody hooks up to a nice fish – we figured it was a Yellowtail but then when we got it next to the boat we realized it was a White Sea Bass! We were so excited because these fish are called “ghosts” for a reason, they are very hard to catch, and taste extremely good too!

We continued on our way to continue with the hunt for Bluefin Tuna and when we got to the initially planned area we saw a lot of birds and bait but no sign of tuna so we put our trollers out and headed northwest towards our planned 2nd area.
After about 6 miles we started seeing many boats in this area so we knew there were fish around and as we stopped the boat to bring in the trolling lures we started noticing tuna on our sonar. We weren’t finding big schools, just one or two would swim by every handful of minutes. It was enough for us to have some hope that we might be onto something and within 10 min Cody was hooked up again. He handed the rod to me and I brought in the 25lb Bluefin. My dad hooked up but unfortunately the tuna broke the line right away.

After a couple more hours in that area we made a move to 7 miles southeast of us and were lucky to find more fish – we ended up hooking up to 3 more Bluefin to really round out the day nicely.

Around 4pm we decided to head in and after about an hour or so we were back in the bay cleaning the boat.
Another great day in the books.
